Government Bunker (Regierungsbunker)
This provisional emergency residence of the Federal Government was opened to public as a museum on 1st March 2008. It was meant to be a place of refuge for the constitutional bodies in case of war.

Detailed documentation and original artifacts at the original location inform you today about a chapter of German history, a part of the world-wide scenario of atomic threat of super powers during the Cold War in the East and the West.

The Government Bunker in Ahrtal was the most confidential building in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its planning dates back to1950. The current Documentation Centre had been the entrance to the important areas of the government which were situated safely beneath a cover of up to 110 meters – the room of the Chancellor, the office of the President, or the room for the joint committee of Bundestag and Bundesrat.

Today, 203 meters of the previous complex has been kept on view, it is not open daily, though.
