The Medicinal Springs in Bad Neuenahr
The Drinking Fountain in Bad Neuenahr

The history of the spa Bad Neuenahr began when the mineral spring was consecrated on July 28, 1858.
The future Empress of Prussia, Princess Augusta, drank the first "official" glass of water from the spring, and the spring was named in her honor (Augusten-Quelle). The magnificent consecration ceremony was soon followed by Bad Neuenahr's rapid ascent on the international scene.

On October 3, 1861, one of the mineral springs, which had recently been tapped and had flowed quietly up to then, suddenly erupted with a loud explosion, violent gush of hot water, igneous rocks that were as big as a fist, thick steam, and a considerable amount of carbonic gas.

This "Großer Sprudel" (Great Geyser) has been at the center of the mineral cure in Bad Neuenahr ever since.

The water from the "Großer Sprudel" is distributed in the Pump Room and other locations throughout Bad Neuenahr such as the Hotel Steigenberger and the Hochstaden Clinic to this day. "Villa Sibilla," the new, exclusive assisted living center run by the Aktiengesellschaft Bad Neuenahr, also has its own mineral spring.

One of the Bad Neuenahr Spa Authorities' most important duties is still tapping and maintaining the supply of high quality mineral water. That is why they drilled the Walburgisquelle (Walburgis spring) in 1975/76. This spring supplies the Ahr-Thermen, a thermal bath, which is known for the wellness experience because of this water.
